Brief: Critically respond to Harrison Butker's graduation speech, which has sparked significant controversy. This task encourages exploration of these discussed in the speech through the lens of a graphic designer and create a response that either subverts or responds to the media message analysed.
Concept: Responding to Butker’s speech, the publication, specifically responds to his statement calling pride month a “deadly sin... that has an entire month dedicated to it”.
It is a free and widely accessible zine that is targeted toward supporting LGBTIQ+ communities around Melbourne. Sharing events, spaces, services and venues across the city, helping connect members of the community.
Being printed on a singular A3 page allows for low cost and quick and easy production, ensuring it is easy to access around the city. With a series of differently coloured/printed zines in each stack, it allows for the end user to choose their favourite. Whether that is the multicoloured one, or the pink text on pink paper, pink text on yellow paper, etc.
The primary typeface “Queering” by Adam Naccarato which was created to be used for pro-LGBTIQ+ projects and never to be used in a way that is demeaning or insulting towards LGBTIQ+ values. Utilising bright and bold colour makes a statement that we are loud and proud and not going anywhere. Additionally, each zine contains a poster on the back which is inspired by protest signs, conveying how far we have come and have left to go in LGBTIQ+ rights across the world.
