Brief: Open | Close invites you to choose a book (work of fiction, novel, biography) that is out of copyright and asks you to consider how a designer can use typography and experimental formats to amplify this storytelling device of a book and give stories a new life.
Concept: Through thorough reading and analysis of the text and additional research, the desired outcome is a traditional typeset of the text, with hand painted/drawn page ornamentation. It will be B-format size in order to allow for a more conventional and traditional typeset of a novel that complements the illustrations and reading experience, with adequate margins allowing for easy holding by the reader.
As the text already has a large target audience, I will focus on a similar target audience to myself. A contemporary take with delicate illustrations, coupled with a traditional typeset, my aim is to further engage a very device heavy generation. Prompting further exploring into the beauty of this text, past just the 2019 movie they may have viewed without having previously read the text.
Leaning into the whimsical, coming of age nature of the text, the text will be accompanied by page illustrations conveying growth and change over the duration of the text. Throughout my research, a large impact of the style of illustration came from the book cover designs on the many editions of the text.
Outcome: The first chapter illustrates the wild, uncontained growth, of a plant, reflecting the journey of the sisters as they enjoy the final years of childhood. By the closing of the book, the illustrations become refined and dainty, reflecting the refining and constrictive nature of adulthood in addition to the sister’s growth since the opening of the text. In addition to this, another two colourways are introduced to the illustrations. Reflecting on the separation of the sisters’ lives with the new route each are taking with their own lives, which are no longer so intertwined as their childhood once was. The final few pages of the final chapter revisit the earlier plant to convey the beginning of new journeys and growth for the sisters.
